Pehli nazar mein, Race

There's a good reason why singer Debojit Saha would often break into an impromptu rendition of the dripping-in-romance ditty, Pehli nazar mein in reality show, Bigg Boss 2.

Atif Aslam struck the chord in all the right places with this Valentine's Day favourite of 2008. Sweet and soulful, Pehli nazar (scored by Pritam again) took the radio and countdown charts by storm. And if you thought its overkill would reduce the impact, remember Pehla nasha?

Tu muskura, Yuvvraaj
Subhash Ghai's lavish tale of three brothers bit box office dust but that is hardly Rahman's problem.

The ace composer strikes gold once again for the out-of-touch showman with a bouquet of magnificent music.

The soundtrack brims with enchanting compositions like Tu hi meri dost, Zindagi, Dil ka rishta and Shano shano. But the sublime loveliness of Tu muskura, thanks to Gulzar's stirring imagery and Alka Yagnik's gorgeous delivery compels us to place it above others.

Kabhi kabhi Aditi, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na
My gift is my song and this one's for you? Look who has done Elton John proud! Our very own Abbas Tyrewala. The Aditis of the world owe the writer-turned-director a big one for this glorious gift of a song. Bring on a super-endearing picturisation of the same on bouncy younglings -- Imran Khan and Genelia D'Souza.

Without any question, A R Rahman's young, animated cheer-up ditty, sung spiritedly by Rashid Ali, is full of beans and spunky beat.

In fact, the entire soundtrack is more than happy to rest on the strength of Rahman's feel-good concoctions and left-footed Pappus.

Khwaja mere khawja, Jodhaa Akbar
Royalty rules. So does Rahman. The maestro impresses again and again with inspiring consistency. And 2008 is simply glorious.

While the effervescence, eccentricity and elegance of Ghajini, Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na and Yuvvraaj leaves listeners floored and fans beaming with pride, Rahman's piece de resistance of the year is decidedly the soundtrack of Jodhaa Akbar.

Through five compositions and two theme pieces, he creates grandeur, romance, history and emotions even more exciting than Ashutosh Gowarikar's lengthy labour of love.

The power of Rahman's boundless imagination, brilliant detailing and exhilarating rendition coupled with Kashif's touching reverence comes alive in trance-transporting divinity of Khwaja mere khwaja. Flawles
